History

The origin of Liberia as an independent country, has very specific characteristics among current African States. Until 1822, all the territory of Liberia was part of the British colony of Sierra Leone. In that year, the American Colonization Society which had been founded a few years earlier with the intention of getting rid of free blacks and perhaps with the idea of opening a gap between European countries at that time fought to carve up the continent , bought the British colony area and began sending and finance or voluntary migration of black Americans semiforzosa, creating the first American colony in Africa, in Monrovia, named in honor of U.S. President Monroe as the center of the colony .
